Classes meet each week on the same day and time. Each session is 2 hours long for a total of 8 hours of instruction. We offer three different start times, 10am, 1pm, and 6pm on either Wednesday or Thursday and a 10am class on Saturday. Classes are limited to four people so everyone gets lots of hands-on help.
The first month of classes are designed for students who have never done any woodworking. Students create two beautiful projects they can be proud that they made with their own hands.
The first project is a beautiful cutting board where students learn basic tools use and of course safety. The second project is a small shelf or stool that expands student's skills.
Students learn about how to get the most out of wood as a material and gain a basic foundation of woodworking skills. We use simple inexpensive tools available to anyone.
After completing two months of beginning woodworking classes students are ready to tackle a project of their own. Our goal is to teach people to be able to work independently. As people advance in their skills, they start to focus on various aspects of woodworking. Some want to learn to make boxes or turn things on the lathe, some want to carve or do home remodeling repairs. We even have a few students who do metal working!
We work with advancing students to best facilitate their exploration of the craft which is always built on a foundation of chisel and saw skills.
We like to say kids 8 to 80 but the age restriction is primarily due to size and mass. Kids under 8 tend to be to be too small to reach even our shortest workbench. More importantly, don't have the strength and mass to pull the saws or push the hand planes. This is real woodworking, not infotainment, and in order to ensure each student's success we care about such things. That said, I have had kids as young as 6 so feel free to reach out to us and have a conversation.

At Woodshop Squared, we teach real-world skills through our Sacramento woodworking classes, utilizing commonly available and inexpensive tools. Our style of woodworking pays homage to the days of pioneers who used human-scale tools powered by... humans.
The objects displayed on the left were crafted by youth students, some as young as nine, in our woodworking classes in Sacramento. Even our woodworking finishes are handmade from beeswax and mineral oil, ensuring they are completely kid-safe.

At Woodshop Squared, we utilize vintage tools, some dating back to the time of Benjamin Franklin, though most are from the early 1900s. We even craft some of our own tools! Much of the wood we work with is either repurposed or salvaged, and the most exciting part is that we also harvest wood from local urban trees. In our woodworking classes in Sacramento, we use a variety of woods including avocado, grapefruit, sycamore, apple, camphor, elm, walnut, cork oak, and more, often collected after windstorms or generously donated to us.
At Woodshop Squared, we believe that woodworking is more than just a hobby; it's an art form. That's why we offer a wide range of woodworking supplies and tools to help you bring your creative vision to life.
